Synopsis: Tyler Gunter holds the distinct honor of being the first surfer in the Hot 100 born in the 21st century. At 9 years old, Tyler is still very much a grom. What’s more impressive—and perhaps shocking—is how well the Newport kid surfs. The future looks bright for this child of the new millennium.
Variables: At an age that has yet to strike double-digits, it’s not an easy task to pick apart Tyler’s surfing. Let’s keep it simple: He’s good…really good…for a 9-year-old.
Forecast: With the majority of his counterparts recently weaned off breast milk, Tyler is already leaps and bounds ahead of his contingency. We’re not familiar with many other 9-year-olds that can throw down a legitimate frontside hack at Lowers.

June 30th, 2008, Tyler spends his first week of summer surfing perfect Lowers with the best amateur and pro surfers in the Nation. Tyler ends up making it to the semi-finals and takes the 7th spot overall in the Nation. Click here to view pictures of Tyler with Kelly Slater and short video of his week surfing. May 11, 2008 Tyler Wins the last event of the WSA season and is awarded his 1st title of West Coast Champion. Tyler won all his heats and ended with the highest over all score with his top seven finishes. Tyler won 6 out of his 7 events and had over a 2500 point lead heading into the final contest. May 5th, 2008. Time has flown by! NSSA seaon and the WSA season are almost over . Tyler is currently ranked number 1 in the WSA winning all his heats but 1 in seven contest this year in his age diviion. Tyler is currently ranked 6th in the competitive NSSA southwest open in the 10 and under mini groms, and has secured his spot for Nationals this June. This month will be busy wrapping up the year, be sure to check back to see updates and check out Fiatsurf photos under most recent photos. September 20, 2007, Tyler surfed in the season opener for the NSSA Open in Huntington Beach. The waves were pumping with double over head sets for Tyler. Tyler advanced thru two rounds and made it to the final and took 4th. It was Tyler's first time to win a NSSA Open trophy. Click here to read article and see Tyler with his hardware. September, 9th 2007, Tyler Gunter surfed in NSSA Explorer contest this past weekend. Tyler advance thru to the Semi Finals and took 5th. It was an awesome contest and it was the 1st time he has advance in the 12 & under division in the NSSA. Click here to read article

August 24th, 2007, Tyler surfed this past Weekend in the Volcom VQS contest in Huntington Beach. Tyler surfed in the grom division 14 and under. Tyler took 2nd in his round 1 and caught the biggest wave of the heat. Tyler took 4th in the second round, missing out by a .5. It was a hot day and lots of fun!
